The University of Duisburg-Essen’s 14th Diversity Day will take place on 18 May at the Duisburg campus. Under the slogan ‘Diversity across Borders’, the Vice-Rectorate for University Culture, Diversity and International Affairs encourages students and staff to come together, celebrate diversity at our University and, at the same time, welcome the international guests of the Aurora Annual Conference.

Between 2 and 5 pm, the space between the buildings LF, LK, LA and LX on the Duisburg campus will be given over to a festival where all members of the University can find information and exchange thoughts about inclusion, equal opportunities and diversity. While enjoying hot and cold drinks and a selection of tidbits, you can meet and interact with key players who advocate the protection and visibility of diversity at UDE. Both English and German will be spoken.

Festival ground on the Duisburg campus

If the weather is nice, a small festival ground will be set up between the trees in front of the LK library. Here, curious members of staff and students can get together and get creative, with opportunities to make buttons, win vouchers and other activities on offer at various tents. The area below, in front of the LF building, will be equipped with our new ‘city decks’ and a lounge corner provided by the General Student Committee (AStA) for informal conversations.

Diversity as academically explored and underpinned at our University will also feature on this day. The Institute for Gender-Sensitive Medicine, the Committee for Diversity Management’s working group on right-wing extremism and others will present their work in the foyer of the library and in the University’s communication room (Kommunikationsraum).

Speech by Dr. Mai Thi Nguyen-Kim

This year’s Diversity Day will be held in association with the Aurora Annual Conference, which will take place between 18 and 21 May in Duisburg. Aurora is a network of nine European universities that jointly examine the impact of sustainability and innovation on society and, in addition to various other endeavours, offer students opportunities for international exchange.

Immediately after the Diversity Day Dr. Mai Thi Nguyen-Kim will give a keynote speech titled ‘Cutting through the noise: How to catch people’s attention and build trust in the information age’. It is open to all UDE students and staff.
